Black folk everywhere are gearing up for the release of Black Panther. Though some insiders have been lucky enough to attend early showings, the rest of us have eagerly awaited opening night. The film has generated a notable amount of excitement from audiences, and rightly so. The movie is set to be Marvel’s Blackest moment to date. Directed by Ryan Coogler, the story follows a largely Black cast in the fictional land of Wakanda. In the comic books Wakanda is a furturistic African nation and the only country in the continent that has never been colonized. Viewers are placed front seat into a sci-fi depiction of what Africa might be like without the influence of imperialism. For Black audiences, who generally don’t see themselves depicted as heroes on the big screen, this is huge.

In anticipation of the movie’s arrival Black folk have come up with elaborate plans on how watch the movie. Ideas include sneaking soul food into theaters, drinking henny, and dressing like African royalty. One Facebook page titled “Acting Extra Black at the Black Panther Premier” had almost 10,000 interested attendees. I can’t help but be swept up by the frenzy that is Black Panther. I’ve never felt more invested in a movie or the watching experience. I decided to create a “What to Wear to See Black Panther Guide”, because everyone should dress in their Wakanda’s best.

African Prints

African prints are a must for this event. To design the costumes, wardrobe designer Ruth E. Carter drew inspiration from various African tribes and traditions. Chewing Gum actress, Michaela Coal actually made her outfit for the films premiere in 2 hours.

Neckwear and Beads

Channel the strength of the Dora Milaja by wearing a bold necklace or beaded gear. The fierce neck rings worn by T’chala’s personal guards are inspired by the metal ones donned by the South African Ndebele tribe.
